What do I need in my hospital bag?
If you’re like me, you pack a ton for any trip! For this trip, packing your hospital bag would be no exception especially if this is your first baby! I know I searched high and low for the perfect answer for what to have in my bag and I can tell you I had 2 bags. I used everything I packed in both of the bags! Be sure to see my ultimate trick for handling all this gear at the end. Your family will thank you. 🙂
Had I not prepared for every situation, having had an emergency C-section it would have been an uncomfortable experience.
Hospital Bag Packing for Mom:
Pack 3 Sets. This is a personal preference however I would suggest a shorts/pants set with a matching top, shelf bra tank top or breastfeeding tank top. You might think 3 is excessive but if you end up having a c-section, you will be there around 3-4 nights. I had packed a nursing nightgown and it was hard getting comfortable on the bed without showing my lady parts.
Great Maternity Pajama Set available on Amazon.
If you would take it to a hotel, take it to the hospital. Enough said. Yes, even the razor – what happens if you go into labor and hadn’t had a chance to shave your legs. This might be the last time you have the ability to shower while someone watches your baby for a few days. I was able to pull together extra toiletries and bought a few pieces of make up.
Elf makeup is a GREAT, affordable option! You would be amazed at the amount of people who want to take pictures!
Dry Shampoo is amazing for in between showers and sometimes you just won’t want to get up. If it doesn’t get used in the hospital, I can promise you, you’ll use it in the first few months home with your baby!
Electronic chargers & charging pod
Just give in and buy a few extra charging cords, keep 1 in our purse and 1 in your hospital bag. Also you will want a dual port to plug into the wall because I can guarantee whoever is with you will also need a charger. Order a cord for your husband while you are at it. Put these in a small bag and include a camera if that is your preference. Amazon iPhone Charging Cord & charging block.
Going home outfit
Pack 5 Pairs. While you are in the hospital they will give you these awesome briefs with undergarments. If you don’t end up liking them I suggest buying some black under wear and packing a few. These are an essential for postpartum care!
Have 2 nursing bras packed. If you are unsure of a size, don’t go too much bigger and don’t go crazy ordering expensive ones. You can always get them from Amazon and buy nicer ones when you return home and know your size.
You will want anti slip socks or anti slip slippers. If you’re like me you’re probably thinking that you don’t need the anti-slip, they are so hard to find – you WILL want them when it comes to holding your newborn! The hospital ones can look tacky, and I am sure if you get them cute enough, you will use them again!
Hospital Bag for Baby
Newborn Baby Sleepwear
Pack 6 outfits. Yes, the hospital does provide but I personally wanted to use some outfits I couldn’t wait to see him in! They will get messy and if your newborn ends up using formula, I do not suggest plain white. We chose sleep gowns and ordered a few packs, washed them and packed them.
Newborn Baby Picture attire
Bring at least 1 plain white onesie, a cute cap, and any additional props. I personally used 1 stuffed animal and 1 baby blanket that he has used for all pictures since. You can often get pictures in the hospital and I encourage it greatly. You don’t want to have to leave in the first week once you get home.
GUESS WHAT?! They have you covered here.
Here are some FREE things you can get extras of in the hospital.
Baby Car Seat
Have it available in the car. Have you thought about one that just click-connect-go style!!
Hospital Bag for Dad
3 sets, okay maybe if he is that guy 2. He will want to be there in the hospital to enjoy the baby. Unexpected events do happen and we each went through 3 pairs of pajamas.
3 Sets, same concept applies here. Babies get messy and if you are in the hospital longer than planned you will be relieved to know no one needs to go pick up more clothes.
Pack an extra toothbrush and anything small for him in your bag. He will thank you! Oh and remember the razor!
Avoid hangry! Pack some favorite snacks for you both.
A gift – if he is a first time dad, think about a watch, keychain, personalized shirt. He will be excited too!
Hospital Bag Extras I loved
This is why I had an extra bag….. Absolutely worth it!
Hospital ones are just so flat, you will want at least 2 of your own. Oh and remember the nursing one, that will fit in this bag too.
Its always nice to have something of your own. I personally had a cute small fleece one I brought. This could also be used for the photography in the hospital. Nothing fancy!
Extra space in your bag
You will get things from the hospital to take home like diapers, under garments, toiletries, baby things, gifts, cards, flowers – You will be grateful for this space.
So here is the ultimate trick. I used a rolling suitcase set.
It’s my personal suggestion if you have them. They are easy to stack you can put them in a corner, one in the linen closet and if you have 2 hangers throw them in so you can hang things and make it feel a little more comfortable. When you have a rolling suitcase you can roll them with you when they insist you take the wheelchair out the door. HE will thank you!
Enjoy the journey and be sure to sleep in the hospital before you return home!
